What an IPL session market actually is

An innings is split into blocks of overs. The exchange posts a runs line for each block - for example, first 6 overs: 48-50. The two numbers are the boundary between the two sides of the market:

• Yes (the higher number, 50): you back the batting side to score more than 50 in the first six overs.
• No (the lower number, 48): you back them to score fewer than 48.

Next to each side is a rate, usually shown as a number near 100 such as 95 or 105. That rate is the profit per 100 staked if your side wins. A rate of 100 pays even money; below 100 pays slightly less because the market believes that side is more likely; above 100 pays more because it is the underdog side.

Lines are examples, not predictions. A pitch that is playing slow will open with lower lines; a short boundary and dew will push them up.

A worked example in rupees

Say the 10-over line is 82-84, with yes at 100 and no at 100. You think the batting side is set for a big over block and back yes at 84 for Rs 500.

• Side reaches 90 after ten overs: you win Rs 500 profit (500 x 100 / 100), and your stake is returned.
• Side finishes on 80: you lose the Rs 500 stake.
• Side finishes on exactly 82 or 83 - inside the gap between the two numbers: settlement depends on the market rules shown on the screen; on most exchange sessions the gap means the line was set between them and the bet is settled against the number you took, so check the rule before you place.

If instead you took no at 82 for Rs 500 and the side made 78, you win Rs 500. The only difference between yes and no is which side of the line you stand on; there is no bookmaker margin built into one side more than the other.

Reading the session rate while the over is live

Exchange session prices are made by other users backing and laying, so they react instantly:

• A boundary lifts the line by two to four runs and the yes rate shortens.
• A dot ball nudges the line down by a run; two dots in a row and the no side starts to look attractive.
• A wicket is the biggest single move - the line can drop five to eight runs at once because a new batter needs time.
• Between overs the market briefly suspends while the price is reset for the new bowler.

Because the line follows the match, chasing it after the event has already happened means you are paying for information the market already has. The disciplined approach is to form a view before the over - which bowler, which batter on strike, what the field looks like - and act only if the line disagrees with you.
